Website Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3 October 2026

Reading this website tells us nothing about you. There are no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind. There are two places where you can choose to send us something — telling us about a missing product, and registering your interest — and this page explains exactly what happens to each.

Looking for an app policy instead? The iPhone app has its own policy, as do the Android app and Seographic.

Telling us about a missing product

The app looks barcodes up in a list that ships inside it, which is why it works in a supermarket aisle with no signal — and why it misses own-brand and very new products. When a scan finds nothing, the app offers Help us add it, which opens the Add a missing item page here on the website. You can also reach that page directly: nothing about it requires the app.

The barcode you scanned is carried over in the link, so nobody has to type thirteen digits they have already scanned once. That is the only thing handed to the page, and it is a barcode, not a fact about you — there is no account for it to be attached to.

The page asks you for:

  • the barcode — already filled in if you arrived from the app;
  • what the product is called, and the brand;
  • what it is mainly wrapped in, and the number inside the recycling triangle;
  • anything else you think is worth saying.

The page itself sends none of it. When you press Send it in, it opens your own email app with the answers already written out, addressed to info@saveourseas.org.uk. Nothing leaves your device until you press send there, and you can edit or abandon the message first. Close the page instead and nothing has been recorded anywhere — there is no draft, no half-submission and no log of a visit that went no further.

Because it reaches us as an ordinary email, we see the address it came from, and whatever name your mail account puts on outgoing messages. The form never asks for either and the page never transmits them: they arrive the way they would on any email you send anyone. We use them for one thing — adding the product, and replying if what you sent raises a question.

The product details themselves are the point. They go into the public file the app downloads when someone taps Update scans, so the next person to scan that barcode gets an answer instead of a blank. Only the product details go into it. Your email address, your name, and anything else about you are never part of that file, never published, and never passed to anyone else.

Sending one signs you up to nothing. There is no account, no mailing list and no marketing, and we will not write to you again except to answer you.

We keep your email while we add the product and in case we need to ask you something, and then we delete it. If you would rather it went sooner, say so at info@saveourseas.org.uk and it will, along with anything else you have sent us.

Registering your interest

The Register Interest form on the home page is hosted by Airtable and displayed inside our page. What you type into it goes to Airtable, who hold it on our behalf — it does not pass through this website on the way. Being someone else's form, it may set its own cookies inside that box; ours are described below. We use what you send to tell you how the campaign is going, and you can ask us to remove you at any time at the address above.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies of its own — none for analytics, none for advertising, none for anything. The only thing it remembers is whether you pressed the dark-mode button, and that is stored by your browser on your own device and never sent anywhere. Clearing this site's data in your browser forgets it.

What your browser fetches from elsewhere

Two things on these pages come from somewhere other than our own server. In both cases your browser asks for them directly, so the other service sees your IP address just as it would if you had visited it yourself:

  • Google Fonts — the typefaces used across the site are served by Google, from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com.
  • A published Google Sheet — the notice that sometimes appears at the top of the home page is read from a spreadsheet we publish. It travels towards you only; nothing about your visit goes back the other way.

Our server logs

Like any website, ours records that a request arrived — a page, an IP address, a time. We do not use those logs to build a picture of who you are, there is no analytics sitting on top of them, and we do not join them up with anything else described on this page.

Sharing and third parties

We do not sell or trade anything anyone sends us. Beyond the company that hosts the site, the only outside services involved anywhere on it are the two named above: Google, for the fonts and the notice, and Airtable, for the Register Interest form. What those two do with what passes through them is covered by their own privacy policies rather than this one.

Children

The site is suitable for all ages, and the missing-product form asks nothing personal — it asks about a packet. If a child sends one in, the only thing we receive about them is the address the email came from, and the same request works: ask, and it is deleted.

Changes to this policy

If the site changes in a way that affects this page, we will update it and change the date at the top. In particular, if the missing-product form were ever to submit directly to us rather than opening your own email app, we would say so here before it did.

Questions about this policy, or a request to delete something you have sent us, go to info@saveourseas.org.uk.

This policy covers the saveourseas.org.uk website. The apps are covered separately: iPhone, Android and Seographic.
