Seographic — the Save Our Seas magazine

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 12 September 2026

The Seographic app does not collect any data. There is no account, no sign-up and no analytics. What you save stays on your iPhone, and none of it is ever sent to us or to anyone else.

This policy covers the magazine app. Our main iPhone app has its own privacy policy, and so does the Android app.

What we collect

Nothing. We have no account system, no way to identify you and no analytics of any kind. We are not told that you installed the app, what you read, what you save, or whether you have alerts switched on.

What the app stores on your iPhone

So it works offline and remembers where you were, the app keeps four things in its own private storage on your phone:

  • The articles you bookmark — a list of which ones, and nothing more.
  • The current issue — so it still reads with no signal.
  • The pictures from that issue — kept alongside it.
  • Your alert setting — whether you asked to be told about new issues.

None of it is sent anywhere. You can wipe the lot at any time with Delete everything stored on this device, under About in the app.

Downloading the magazine

The app does one thing on the internet: it asks saveourseas.org.uk for the current issue and downloads the articles and pictures. It only travels one way, towards your phone. Nothing about you, and nothing you have saved, is sent with the request.

Being straightforward about the one exception: like every web server, the one hosting the magazine records that a request arrived, and that record includes the internet address it came from. We do not use those records to build any picture of readers, and they are not connected to anything you do in the app. They exist so the site can be kept running and secure.

New-issue alerts

Optional, and off until you switch them on. These are not push notifications. There is no notification server, and your phone is never registered with us or with anyone else — no device token exists. iPhone simply wakes the app up now and then, the app looks at the same public magazine file it always downloads, and if there is something new it raises the alert on the phone itself.

The trade-off, said plainly: because iPhone decides when to wake the app, an alert can arrive some hours after an issue is published rather than the moment it goes live. We would rather be late than hold a list of every reader's phone.

Sharing and third parties

The app contains no advertising, no tracking technologies, and no third-party analytics or software development kits. We do not share, sell or transfer your information, because we never receive any.

Our articles are written in Airtable, but that is our newsroom, not something your phone talks to. The app never connects to Airtable, and Airtable is never told anything about you: we publish each issue as an ordinary file on this website, and that file is all your phone ever asks for.

Backups to your own Apple Account

iOS has its own backup feature — iCloud Backup, and encrypted backups made to a computer — which you switch on or off in your iPhone's settings, not in this app. If you have it on, your bookmark list is included, in the same way your other apps' settings are.

That backup is Apple's and yours: it goes to your Apple Account, it is encrypted, and it never reaches the campaign. The downloaded issue and its pictures are deliberately kept out of it, since they can always be fetched again.

Your rights

UK and EU data protection law gives you the right to see what an organisation holds about you, to correct it, and to have it deleted. We hold nothing about readers of this app, so there is nothing for us to send you and nothing for us to delete on your behalf — and everything the app has kept is erased by the button in the app, or by deleting the app.

If you have separately given us your email address through the Register Your Interest form on this website, that is held by the campaign rather than by the app. Email us and we will remove it.

Children

The magazine is suitable for all ages, and much of the campaign's work is in schools. Because the app collects nothing whatsoever, it does not knowingly or unknowingly collect information from children.

Changes to this policy

If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and the copy inside the app, and change the date at the top. If a future version were ever to collect anything, we would say so here clearly and ask your permission in the app first.
