The Save Our Seas app

The campaign, in your pocket.

Scan a barcode to see what the packaging is made of and where it goes, track the single-use plastic you skip and log your beach cleans. Free, in English and French, with nothing to sign up for.

New · Scan & Swap

Scan it before you buy it

Point your camera at the barcode on any packet and the app tells you what it's wrapped in, whether it goes in your recycling at home, the supermarket film bank or the general bin — and one thing to use instead. Then count it in one tap.

Around 170,000 UK products are built into the app, so it works in the aisle with no signal. Scanned something we don't have? One tap brings you to our website to help us add it.

Product details come from Open Food Facts, a database built by volunteers. The recycling advice is our own, worked out from what the packaging is made of — councils do differ, so treat it as a steer, not the last word.

A scan result for a bottle of cola: a PET plastic bottle to recycle at home, a lid to screw back on, and the swap, refill instead.

Track

Track what you didn't use

Tap an item each time you skip the single-use version — a bottle refilled, a bag you already had, a coffee in your own cup.

The app keeps a running total for today and for all time, shows your day streak, and charts the last seven days, along with roughly how much plastic that adds up to.

The Track screen: today's total, the all-time total, a day streak and a chart of the last seven days.

Milestones

Mark the moments

A moment to celebrate hitting 10 items avoided, a week's streak or your first beach clean.

Switch on the weekly recap and you'll also get what you avoided this week, next to the week before.

A milestone: a seven-day streak.

Beach cleans

Log your beach cleans

Record where you went, the date, how many bags you filled and how many people came, with a photo and any notes worth keeping.

Every clean you log adds to your running totals.

Share

Share your total

Turn your numbers into a card you can send to anyone.

Nothing leaves your phone until you choose where to send it.

The campaign, built in

All three Save Our Seas websites come inside the app, so you can read them with no signal at all — handy on a beach.

Your list, in your words

Your list of actions lives on the Home screen, and it starts empty on purpose. Write down what you're actually going to do, add a note or a photo, and tick it off.

Your photos in one place

A gallery of every photo from your beach cleans and your own actions, right on the Home screen.

In English and French

The whole app speaks both. Pick a language when you first open it, or let it follow your phone, and change your mind any time in Settings.

Your data is yours

We can't see any of it.

Nothing you log is uploaded. There's no account, no sign-up and no analytics — we can't see any of it.

Your items, actions, beach cleans and photos are stored on your device, and nothing about what you scan ever leaves it — the product list is inside the app. Delete the app and every bit of it goes with it.
