Save Our Seas Android App
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 September 2026
The Save Our Seas Android app does not collect any data. There is no account, no sign-up and no analytics. Everything you enter stays on your phone, and none of it is ever sent to us or to anyone else.
Looking for the iPhone app instead? See the iPhone privacy policy.
What we collect
Nothing. The app does not ask for internet access at all — it holds no
INTERNET permission, which means Android itself will not let it make a network
request even if it tried to. We have no servers receiving your information, no way to
identify you, and no way to see anything you record in the app.
What the app stores on your device
The app saves what you enter so it's still there next time you open it. This is kept in the app's own private storage, which no other app on your phone can read:
- Plastic tracker — the counts and dates of single-use items you've avoided.
- Your action list — the actions you add, any notes, and whether you've ticked them off.
- Beach clean logs — the place, date, number of bags, volunteer counts and notes you record.
- Photos you choose to add — a copy is saved inside the app's own storage.
- Your settings — such as whether you've turned the daily reminder on, and which language you've chosen.
Permissions the app asks for
Two, and only for the reasons given:
- Notifications — asked for only when you switch a reminder on. On Android 12 and older, notifications need no permission at all.
- Run at startup — so a daily reminder you've set survives a reboot instead of silently stopping. It is used for nothing else.
The app asks for no location, no contacts, no microphone, no camera and no storage permission, and — as above — no internet access.
Photos
When you add a photo, Android shows you its own photo picker and passes the app only the single image you select. The app is never given access to your photo library — it cannot browse, read or upload your other photos, and it needs no storage permission to do this. The image you pick is copied into the app's private storage (scaled down, to save space), and deleting the entry deletes the copy.
Notifications
The daily reminder and the weekly recap are optional. Both are alarms your own phone sets for itself at the time you choose — they are not push notifications. Nothing is sent from a server, there is no push service involved, and we are not told whether you have them enabled or what they say.
The home screen widget
If you add the widget, it shows today's count and your current streak. Those two numbers are read from the app's own private settings on your phone and drawn on your home screen. Nothing is sent anywhere. Worth knowing simply because a home screen is visible to whoever is looking at it — if you'd rather it weren't on show, remove the widget and the app works exactly as before.
Sharing your totals
The share card is an image the app draws on your phone from your own numbers. It is written to the app's temporary storage and handed to Android's share sheet, and nothing goes anywhere until you pick somewhere to send it. You choose the app and the recipient; from that point the picture is in that app's hands, under its own privacy policy, not ours. We never receive a copy.
The websites inside the app
The Websites tab shows copies of our English, French and Group sites that are built into the app itself. They are loaded from the app's own files, so they work with no internet connection and make no requests to us or to anyone else while you read them. If you tap a link that genuinely points at the web — the register form, or an email address — it opens in your normal browser or mail app, and what happens there is covered by that app's privacy policy rather than this one.
Backups to your own Google Account
Android has its own backup feature, which you switch on or off in Android's settings — not in this app. If you have it on, your Save Our Seas entries and photos are included, so that setting up a new phone brings them back with everything else rather than starting you from zero.
This is worth being clear about, since the rest of this page says nothing is uploaded. That backup is Android's, not ours: it goes to your Google Account, it is encrypted, and it can only be restored to this same app signed in as you. It never reaches the campaign, and we have no way to see it, request it or restore from it. The same applies to the direct phone-to-phone transfer Android offers when you set up a new device. If you would rather none of it were copied anywhere, turning off backup for this app in Android's settings stops it.
Sharing and third parties
We do not share, sell or transfer your information, because we never receive any. The app contains no advertising, no tracking technologies, and no third-party analytics or software development kits.
Deleting your data
You can delete individual entries at any time inside the app. Uninstalling the app removes everything it has stored on the phone, including any photos you added. As we hold no copy of any of it, there is nothing for you to request from us and nothing for us to delete on your behalf. If you have Android backup switched on, a copy may remain in your Google Account for a while after uninstalling — that copy is yours, and it is managed in your Google Account settings.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages. Because it collects no data whatsoever, it does not knowingly or unknowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If a future version were ever to collect anything, we would say so here clearly and ask your permission in the app first.
